How can we speak today of the resurrection of a human being that died (for instance because of some virus). And can we really celebrate the resurrection of the one person, Jesus, at Easter? Shouldn’t we just deal with death as the irreversible end, and get on with living, even in times like this, and hope for the best? Did Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead? Did he himself come alive again, three days after being crucified?...

And now for an English version. There is something that bothers me: the science of medicinal research (in times of crisis). In the Netherlands there was much ado about the increasing scarcity of lysis buffer, being an important solution used for the PCRs used for SARS-CoV-2 testing. My first response to this was: ask a couple of chemists to make the stuff. There are plenty of recipes for this solution on the internet....

Met stijgende verbazing kijk ik naar het ‘medisch geweld’ dat over ons heen rolt in deze corona-maanden. Ja, ik ben buitengewoon blij met de inzet in ziekenhuizen en klinieken. Over de adviserende kwaliteiten van de medisch-academische stand hebben we het al gehad. Het is iets anders dat mijn verbazing wekt. Dat begon met het gedoe over de veel besproken dalende voorraad van de Roche lysisbuffer voor de PCR’s (Polymerase Chain Reaction) die in Nederland worden gebruikt voor het testen van de aanwezigheid van het coronavirus bij personen....

Twee termen die een grote invloed hebben op elkaar. En niet op een goede manier. Laten we eens kijken, te beginnen met definities. Domein-experts zijn personen die op hun onderzoeksgebied -bijvoorbeeld virologie, immunologie, epidemiologie- als expert worden gezien. Ze hebben er voor gestudeerd, zullen we maar zeggen. Minimax? Wat is dat? Heel eenvoudig: het is een beslisregel om mogelijk verlies in een scenario van het ongunstigste soort (aka worst-case scenario) te minimaliseren....

We are still discussing viruses and disease, and will be for the coming weeks, I suspect. More than just the technicalities of this episode, existential questions come to the fore, and we seem less equipped to deal with those. Let’s have a look, shall we? First off, the private and the public seem to be closing in on each other in these ‘pandemic days’. The ‘private’ has public consequences and the ‘public’ has private consequences....
